Topic overview

Cell specialisation means a cell develops a structure suited to a particular function. The structure and the function are always linked, and exam answers must connect the two explicitly.

Sperm cells have a tail for swimming, many mitochondria to release the energy for movement, and enzymes in the head to digest through the egg membrane. Nerve cells are long to carry impulses over distances and have branched endings to connect to other cells.

Muscle cells contain protein fibres that shorten so the cell can contract, and many mitochondria for energy. In plants, root hair cells have a long extension increasing surface area for absorbing water and mineral ions, and xylem cells are hollow dead tubes strengthened with lignin.

Animal cell examples

Sperm cells: a tail for swimming, many mitochondria for energy, and enzymes in the acrosome to penetrate the egg.

Nerve cells: long to transmit impulses over distance, with branched endings forming connections. Muscle cells: protein fibres that shorten, plus many mitochondria.

Plant cell examples

Root hair cells: a long projection giving a large surface area for absorbing water and mineral ions, and no chloroplasts.

Xylem cells: hollow, dead, with no end walls, strengthened by lignin to carry water up the plant. Phloem cells: sieve plates with pores, and companion cells providing energy.

Answering structure-and-function questions

Always state the feature and then explain what it allows the cell to do.

Saying a sperm cell has a tail earns little; saying it has a tail which allows it to swim to the egg earns the mark. The link is what is being assessed.

Model answer

It has a tail so it can swim to the egg (1 mark). It has many mitochondria to release the energy needed for swimming (1 mark). It has enzymes in its head to digest through the egg membrane so fertilisation can occur (1 mark).

Example 2

Explain two ways a root hair cell is adapted for absorbing water. [2 marks]

Model answer

It has a long, thin projection which greatly increases the surface area for absorption (1 mark). It has a thin cell wall so the distance for water to travel into the cell is short (1 mark).

Example 3

Describe how xylem cells are adapted to transport water. [3 marks]

Model answer

They are hollow with no cytoplasm, so water can flow through freely (1 mark). Their end walls have broken down to form a continuous tube (1 mark). They are strengthened with lignin so they do not collapse under pressure (1 mark).

Common mistakes

  • Naming a feature without explaining its purpose.

    The mark is for the link. A tail alone is not enough; say it allows the cell to swim to the egg.

  • Saying a cell wants or needs to do something.

    Use functional language: the structure allows or enables the function.

  • Forgetting that xylem cells are dead.

    They have no cytoplasm or nucleus, which is what makes them hollow tubes.

  • Confusing xylem with phloem.

    Xylem carries water upwards and is dead; phloem carries dissolved sugars in both directions and is living.

Exam tips

  • Always pair each adaptation with what it allows the cell to do.
  • Use the number of marks to tell you how many adaptations to give.
  • Learn one clear example from animals and one from plants.
  • Mention mitochondria whenever a cell needs a lot of energy.
