What is Combined Science?
Combined Science (AQA Trilogy, 8464) is worth two GCSEs and covers Biology, Chemistry and Physics in a single qualification, in slightly less depth than the three separate Triple Science GCSEs. It is the route most GCSE science students take. You still study all three sciences — Combined simply leaves out the extra “Triple only” content.
How it’s assessed
Combined Science is examined by six written papers — two each in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Each paper is 1 hour 15 minutes, worth 70 marks, and counts equally (about a sixth of the grade). It is a linear course: everything is assessed at the end of Year 11, with no coursework. Both Foundation and Higher tiers are available. Across the course there are 21 required practicals — 7 in Biology, 6 in Chemistry and 8 in Physics — tested in the written exams.
How it’s graded
Combined Science is awarded two grades together, on a scale from 9-9 (highest) down to 1-1. The two grades come from your total marks across all six papers, so you can be awarded an adjacent pair such as 7-6.
Combined vs Triple Science
Triple (Separate) Science is three individual GCSEs — Biology, Chemistry and Physics — with more content and longer papers. Combined Science is two GCSEs covering the same core topics but without the Triple-only extensions. If a topic on our site is badged “Triple only”, it is not needed for Combined Science.
