Reflex actions are automatic and rapid responses that do not involve the conscious part of the brain. Their purpose is protection — pulling a hand from a hot object, or blinking when something approaches the eye.
Because the impulse does not travel to the conscious brain, the response is much faster than a considered action. The pathway through the nervous system is called a reflex arc.
The reflex arc adds one component to the standard pathway: a relay neurone in the spinal cord connects the sensory neurone directly to the motor neurone. That short cut is precisely what makes the response rapid.

Why reflexes matter
Reflex actions are automatic and rapid, and they do not involve the conscious part of the brain.
This makes them protective — the body reacts before you have consciously registered the danger, which reduces the chance of injury.
The reflex arc
Stimulus → receptor → sensory neurone → relay neurone → motor neurone → effector → response.
The relay neurone sits in the spinal cord and connects the sensory neurone directly to the motor neurone, bypassing the conscious brain.
Synapses in the arc
There are two synapses in a reflex arc: between the sensory and relay neurones, and between the relay and motor neurones.
Chemicals diffuse across each gap to trigger the next impulse, exactly as in any nervous pathway.

Describe the pathway of a reflex arc. [4 marks]
Model answer
A receptor detects the stimulus (1 mark). An impulse passes along a sensory neurone to a relay neurone in the spinal cord (1 mark), then along a motor neurone (1 mark) to an effector, which brings about the response (1 mark).
Example 3
Give one example of a reflex action and explain how it protects the body. [2 marks]
Model answer
Pulling a hand away from a hot object (1 mark). The rapid automatic response means the hand is removed before serious burning can occur (1 mark).
Common mistakes
Saying reflexes involve no neurones.
They involve three: sensory, relay and motor.
Including the brain in a reflex arc.
The conscious brain is bypassed; the relay neurone is in the spinal cord.
Forgetting the relay neurone.
It is the component that distinguishes a reflex arc from an ordinary nervous pathway.
Saying reflexes are learned.
They are automatic and not consciously controlled.
