Topic overview

Classification organises living organisms into groups based on their structure and characteristics. Traditionally this was done by observation alone.

The Linnaean system, developed by Carl Linnaeus, classifies organisms into kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species. Organisms are named by the binomial system using their genus and species, such as Homo sapiens, with the genus capitalised and both words italicised.

As microscopes improved and understanding of biochemical processes developed, new models were proposed. Carl Woese used evidence from chemical analysis to divide organisms into three domains: archaea, bacteria and eukaryota. Evolutionary trees show how closely related organisms are, using classification data for living species and fossils for extinct ones.

The Linnaean system

Organisms are classified into kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species.

The binomial name uses the genus and species, such as Homo sapiens. The genus takes a capital letter, the species does not, and both are italicised or underlined.

The three-domain system

Carl Woese used evidence from chemical analysis, made possible by improved microscopes and better understanding of biochemistry.

He divided organisms into three domains: archaea, which are primitive bacteria often living in extreme conditions; true bacteria; and eukaryota, which includes protists, fungi, plants and animals.

Evolutionary trees

Evolutionary trees show how closely related different organisms are and how they have evolved from common ancestors.

For living organisms, classification data is used. For extinct organisms, fossil evidence is used instead.

Explain why the three-domain system was developed. [3 marks]

Model answer

Improvements in microscopes allowed internal structures to be seen in far greater detail (1 mark). Better understanding of biochemical processes allowed chemical analysis of organisms (1 mark). This new evidence showed relationships that the older system did not reflect, so a new model was proposed (1 mark).

Name the three domains proposed by Carl Woese. [3 marks]

Model answer

Archaea (1 mark), bacteria (1 mark) and eukaryota (1 mark).

Common mistakes

  • Writing the species name with a capital letter.

    Only the genus is capitalised — Homo sapiens, not Homo Sapiens.

  • Getting the classification order wrong.

    Kingdom is the largest group and species the smallest.

  • Saying the three-domain system replaced classification entirely.

    It sits above the Linnaean groups rather than replacing them.

  • Confusing archaea with bacteria.

    Archaea are primitive bacteria often found in extreme environments; true bacteria form a separate domain.
