Chemical Analysis
Purity, formulations, chromatography and tests for ions.
7 topics
Chemical Analysis covers pure substances and formulations, chromatography, and the tests used to identify gases and ions. Triple students also study flame emission spectroscopy and instrumental methods.
Purity in chemistry means a single element or compound, not the everyday sense of clean or natural — that distinction is examined deliberately. Chromatography rewards understanding what the Rf value represents and being able to calculate it, remembering that it has no units and cannot exceed one. The tests for gases and ions simply need learning, and the marks come from stating both the test and the observed result. A common error is giving the result without the test, or describing a colour change without naming what was added. The chromatography required practical is examined directly.
