Reducing the use of resources, and reusing and recycling materials, all lessen the environmental impact of manufacturing and reduce the use of finite resources.
Reducing means using less of a material in the first place, which is the most effective option. Reusing means using a product again for the same or a different purpose without processing it — glass bottles can be washed and refilled.
Recycling means processing a material so it can be used again. Metals are melted and recast, and the amount of separation needed depends on the metal and the required properties. Glass can be crushed and remelted. All three reduce the energy needed compared with obtaining materials from raw sources.

Recycling metals and glass
Metals are melted and recast into different products.
The amount of separation required depends on the metal and the properties needed for the final product. Glass bottles can be crushed and melted to make different glass products.
Why it matters
Metals, glass, building materials, clay ceramics and most plastics are produced from limited raw materials.
Much of the energy for the processes comes from limited resources too. Reducing, reusing and recycling all cut the use of these finite resources and the energy required.

Model answer
Recycled metal does not need to be extracted from its ore (1 mark), so less of the limited metal ore is used up and less energy is needed for extraction (1 mark).
Example 3
Explain why reducing the use of a material is better than recycling it. [2 marks]
Model answer
Reducing means less of the raw material is used in the first place (1 mark), whereas recycling still requires energy for collecting, sorting and processing the material (1 mark).
Common mistakes
Confusing reuse and recycling.
Reuse involves no processing; recycling requires the material to be processed.
Saying recycling uses no energy.
It uses less than extraction, but collecting, sorting and melting still require energy.
Forgetting the energy argument.
Reduced energy use is as important as reduced material use.
Saying all plastics are easily recycled.
Different polymers must be separated, which complicates recycling.
