Adjectives and Adverbs
Agreement, position, comparatives and superlatives.
11 topics
This unit covers adjective agreement in gender and number, adjective position, irregular adjectives, comparatives and superlatives, and forming and placing adverbs.
Agreement is the recurring source of marks. A correctly agreed simple adjective is worth more than an ambitious one that does not agree, so check every adjective against its noun. Position matters too: most French adjectives follow the noun, which is the opposite of English, with a small group covering beauty, age, goodness and size going before. The distinction students find hardest is meilleur against mieux — meilleur is an adjective describing a noun, mieux an adverb describing a verb. Asking whether a thing or an action is being described settles it every time.
