Negatives and Questions

Negation patterns, question words and forming questions.

7 topics

This unit covers negation with ne...pas and the other negative structures, and the three ways of forming questions.

French negation surrounds the verb with two words, and both are required in writing even though the ne is often dropped in speech. In the perfect tense they surround the auxiliary, leaving the past participle outside — je n'ai pas mangé. The other negatives replace pas rather than joining it, so ne...jamais and ne...rien never appear alongside it. For questions, est-ce que is the safest form because nothing needs reordering, while inversion is the most formal and requires an inserted -t- when the verb ends in a vowel. Learning all three demonstrates range.
