Reflexives, the imperative, impersonal verbs and infinitives.

14 topics

This unit covers modal verbs, reflexive and reciprocal verbs, the imperative, impersonal expressions such as il y a and il faut, weather expressions, telling the time, the passive and the present participle.

Modal verbs are the most useful content here, because pouvoir, vouloir, devoir and savoir each take a direct infinitive with nothing between them, which makes them straightforward to deploy accurately. Reflexive verbs cause more difficulty, since many are not reflexive in English at all — je m'appelle translates as my name is, and the pronoun gets dropped as a result. Weather expressions use faire where English uses to be, and il faut is followed directly by an infinitive with no preposition.
