Topic overview

The plural reflexive pronouns are nous, vous and se, and they follow the same rules as the singular. This is a Higher-only topic.

Nous nous levons means we get up, vous vous levez means you get up, and ils se lèvent means they get up. The repetition of nous and vous looks odd but is correct — the first is the subject and the second is the reflexive pronoun.

Se covers both ils and elles, exactly as it covers il and elle. In the perfect tense all reflexive verbs take être, and the past participle agrees with the subject: nous nous sommes levés for a male or mixed group, nous nous sommes levées for an all-female group.

Revision notes

The plural pronouns

Nous, vous, se — matching nous, vous, and ils or elles.

Nous nous levons. Vous vous levez. Ils se lèvent. Elles se lèvent. The doubled nous and vous is correct: subject first, then reflexive pronoun.

Se covers both plurals

Se is used for both ils and elles, just as for il and elle.

Ils se lèvent and elles se lèvent use the same pronoun. Only the subject pronoun changes.

In the perfect tense

All reflexive verbs take être in the perfect tense.

The past participle agrees with the subject: nous nous sommes levés for a male or mixed group, nous nous sommes levées for females only. Je me suis levé or levée depending on the speaker.
