Topic overview
Electromagnetic waves are transverse waves that transfer energy from a source to an absorber. They form a continuous spectrum, and all travel at the same speed through a vacuum or through air.
The spectrum in order of increasing frequency and decreasing wavelength is: radio, microwave, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays. Learning this order is essential because almost every question depends on it.
Radio waves have the longest wavelength and lowest frequency; gamma rays have the shortest wavelength and highest frequency. Electromagnetic waves are grouped into these seven types, but the spectrum itself is continuous, and our eyes detect only the narrow visible light band.

The order of the spectrum

Visible light
Visible light is the only part of the spectrum our eyes can detect, and it is a very narrow band.
Within it, red has the longest wavelength and violet the shortest. The rest of the spectrum is invisible to us but detectable with instruments.
