Topic overview
A crude rate expresses the number of events per thousand of a population, allowing populations of different sizes to be compared. This is a Higher-only topic.
The formula is \(\frac{\text{number of events}}{\text{total population}} \times 1000\). Crude birth rates and crude death rates are the standard examples.
The problem is that crude rates ignore the age structure of the population. A town with many elderly residents will have a high crude death rate simply because of its age profile, not because it is unhealthy. A standardised rate corrects for this by applying the age-specific rates of the population being studied to a standard population, so that comparisons are fair.

Crude rates

The problem with crude rates
They take no account of the age structure of the population.

Standardised rates
A standardised rate applies the age-specific rates of the population being studied to a standard population.
This removes the effect of differing age structures, so the comparison reflects genuine differences rather than demographic ones.

Forgetting to multiply by 1000.
Crude rates are expressed per thousand of the population.
Comparing crude rates without mentioning age structure.
That limitation is what standardisation exists to fix.
Inverting the fraction.
Events go on top, population underneath.
Saying a high crude death rate means an unhealthy area.
It may simply reflect an older population.
