Topic overview

Data is classified as either qualitative or quantitative, and this determines which diagrams and calculations can be used.

Qualitative data is descriptive and non-numerical, such as eye colour, favourite subject or type of pet. It can be counted into categories but cannot be averaged in the ordinary sense.

Quantitative data is numerical, such as height, number of siblings or time taken. It can be used in calculations, so means and standard deviations are possible. Because the type of data restricts which diagram is appropriate, identifying it correctly is the first step in almost every question about representing data.

Qualitative data

Descriptive, non-numerical data such as eye colour, favourite sport or brand of car.

It is sometimes called categorical data. It can be counted into categories, and the mode can be found, but the mean and median cannot be calculated in the ordinary sense.

Quantitative data

Numerical data such as height, mass, time or number of siblings.

It can be used in calculations, so the mean, median, mode and standard deviation are all possible. It divides further into discrete and continuous.

Why the distinction matters

The type of data determines which diagram is appropriate.

Bar charts and pie charts suit qualitative data. Histograms and scatter diagrams require quantitative data. Choosing a diagram that does not match the data type loses marks.

Common mistakes

  • Calling numbered categories quantitative.

    Shirt numbers are labels, not measurements, so they are qualitative.

  • Trying to find a mean of qualitative data.

    Only the mode is available for descriptive categories.

  • Confusing qualitative with quantitative.

    Qualitative describes a quality; quantitative gives a quantity.

  • Choosing a histogram for categorical data.

    Histograms require continuous quantitative data.
