Topic overview
A choropleth map uses shading to show how a quantity varies across geographical areas. This is a Higher-only topic.
Darker shading normally represents higher values and lighter shading lower values. A key is essential, showing which shade corresponds to which range of values.
The main limitation is that each area is shown as uniform, when in reality the quantity varies within it. A region shaded for high population density may contain both a city and empty countryside. Large areas also draw the eye more than small ones, so a large sparsely populated region can appear more significant than a small densely populated one.

How it works
Geographical areas are shaded according to the value of a quantity in each.
Darker shading normally represents higher values. A key must show which shade corresponds to which range. Ranges should not overlap.
The uniformity limitation
Each area is shown as a single uniform shade, hiding all variation within it.
A region shaded for high population density may contain a dense city and empty countryside. The map cannot show this, which can be misleading.
The area limitation
Large areas occupy more of the map and draw the eye more than small ones.
A large, sparsely populated region can therefore look more significant than a small, densely populated one, even when the small one contains far more people.

Omitting the key.
Without it the shading cannot be interpreted.
Using overlapping ranges in the key.
Each value must fall into exactly one shade band.
Assuming an area is uniform.
The map hides all variation within each region.
Judging significance by area.
Area on the map reflects geography, not the quantity shown.
