Topic overview

Networks connect devices using wired or wireless connections, and each has clear advantages.

Wired connections use cables, usually Ethernet or fibre optic. They are faster, more reliable and more secure, because an attacker must physically connect to the cable to intercept data. The disadvantage is that devices cannot move freely and cabling is expensive to install.

Wireless connections use radio waves, usually Wi-Fi. Devices can move freely and no cabling is needed, so installation is cheaper and quicker. But the connection is slower, less reliable, affected by distance and physical obstructions, and less secure because the signal travels through the air where it can be intercepted without physical access.

Revision notes

Wired connections

Use cables, usually Ethernet or fibre optic.

Advantages: faster, more reliable, more secure. Disadvantages: devices cannot move freely, and installing cabling is expensive and disruptive.

Wireless connections

Use radio waves, usually Wi-Fi.

Advantages: devices can move freely, no cabling needed, cheaper and quicker to install. Disadvantages: slower, less reliable, and affected by distance and obstructions such as walls.

The security difference

Intercepting a wired connection requires physical access to the cable.

A wireless signal travels through the air and can be picked up by anyone in range, which is why encryption matters far more on a wireless network.
