Topic overview

Talking about jobs and future plans combines vocabulary with three tenses, which is what makes it valuable in speaking tasks.

The key grammar point is that no article is used with a job after être: elle est médecin, il est professeur. Adding une here is wrong. But with c'est the article returns: c'est un bon professeur.

Future plans use the near future or the conditional. Je vais travailler dans un bureau uses aller. Je voudrais devenir médecin uses the conditional and is more polite. J'espère aller à l'université uses espérer with a direct infinitive. Using all three shows range within a single answer.

Revision notes

No article with jobs

Elle est médecin. Il est professeur. Je suis étudiant.

No article follows être before a profession. But c'est brings it back: c'est un bon professeur. The rule applies only to the bare profession after être.

Expressing future plans

Je vais travailler — near future with aller.

Je voudrais devenir — conditional, more polite. J'espère aller — espérer with a direct infinitive. Using more than one structure demonstrates range.

Useful vocabulary

Un emploi, un métier, un stage, le salaire, à temps partiel, à plein temps.

Devenir means to become and takes a job with no article: je voudrais devenir médecin. Travailler comme also works: travailler comme infirmier.
